MultiCare Health System
MultiCare Health System is a large, integrated healthcare delivery organization operating a diverse portfolio of clinical environments across its service region. To proactively strengthen safety and security across its system, MultiCare engaged SRMC to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the physical security posture of 25 facilities, including nine acute care hospitals, two behavioral health hospitals, and fourteen urgent care centers, standalone emergency departments, and outpatient clinic locations. Given the variety of facility types and risk profiles, MultiCare sought an objective, system-wide evaluation to identify vulnerabilities, assess consistency, and establish a prioritized roadmap for improvement.
Our Approach
SRMC conducted a structured, risk based assessment designed to evaluate both the strategic and operational components of MultiCare’s physical security program. Our approach included a thorough review of existing security policies and procedures to assess alignment with industry best practices, regulatory requirements, and healthcare-specific standards. We evaluated the adequacy of security staff training, certifications, and ongoing professional development programs to determine readiness and consistency across locations.
In parallel, SRMC assessed the effectiveness, coverage, and integration of security technologies, including access control systems, video surveillance, and alarm systems, with a focus on interoperability and operational use. Physical security measures were evaluated at each facility, including access control practices, perimeter security, patrol strategies, and emergency response protocols. We also examined MultiCare’s risk assessment and risk management processes to understand how security vulnerabilities were identified, documented, and addressed at both the facility and system levels. Emergency preparedness was a critical component of the engagement, with SRMC reviewing emergency response plans, communication protocols, and disaster recovery procedures to ensure clarity, coordination, and scalability during high-impact events.
Results
The engagement resulted in a detailed, systemwide assessment report that clearly identified security strengths, gaps, and vulnerabilities across MultiCare’s diverse portfolio of facilities. SRMC delivered actionable recommendations tailored to the specific risk profile of each facility type, while also identifying opportunities for system-level standardization. The final deliverable included a prioritized action plan that enabled MultiCare leadership to focus resources on the most critical risks first, while establishing a clear path toward longer-term security program maturity, consistency, and resilience.
Conclusion
Through this engagement, SRMC provided MultiCare Health System with a clear, defensible understanding of its physical security posture and a practical roadmap for strengthening safety across a complex healthcare environment. By addressing policies, training, technology, physical safeguards, risk management, and emergency preparedness in an integrated manner, SRMC helped MultiCare move toward a more consistent, proactive, and sustainable security program, one that supports patient care, staff safety, and organizational resilience across the entire health system.
