Healthcare Security Consulting Case Study

Large Regional Healthcare System

SRMC worked with one of the region’s largest healthcare systems, serving as the institution’s outside security consultant.  With 18 hospitals and over 50 outpatient clinics, urgent care centers, and freestanding emergency departments, the system faced a wide range of security issues, including disparate access control, security video and intrusion detection systems, locally controlled police and/or security operations, and vastly different security policies across the system.

SRMC was engaged to evaluate security operations and technologies, with the objective of standardizing technologies and bringing the management of security operations to the corporate level.

Our Approach

SRMC began the engagement by conducting comprehensive assessments of each facility to evaluate the current state of security technology and operations, while simultaneously working with senior leadership to define a unified vision for security across the hospital system. This effort included security assessments of all facilities, alignment of administrative expectations with end user needs, reassessment of key locations to measure progress over time, and the establishment of a consistent, system wide public safety model.

Results

Our work resulted in the development of two comprehensive master plans for the health system with one focused on security technology and the other on security operations. These documents served as the foundational tools for guiding ongoing improvements to the overall security program. The value of master planning lies in establishing a clear vision of the desired future state and, when paired with an assessment of current conditions, identifying the gaps that must be addressed to achieve that vision.

Conclusion

The development of clearly defined security master plans enables the organization to move forward with purpose and consistency by aligning daily decisions and long-term investments with a well defined future state. By identifying and closing gaps between current conditions and desired outcomes, the organization can systematically strengthen its security program, ensure resources are applied strategically, and support continuous, measurable improvement across both technology and operations.
